Classic, Scenic & Loved by Scandinavian Golfers

Summary

Praia D’El Rey is the oldest and most internationally recognised golf course on the Silver Coast. It has long been a favourite among Scandinavian golfers thanks to its mix of classic parkland holes and dramatic ocean-side holes that feel truly unforgettable.

Practical Tips

Bring: A camera — the Atlantic stretch is spectacular.

Buggy? Not a must. The course is walkable, but a buggy can be comfortable on windy days or if you prefer an easier round.

Halfway House: You pass near the clubhouse after 9 holes. Not directly past the entrance — stopping adds a few minutes.

Toilets on the course: Yes — available at several points.

Why we recommend it: It’s a classic, well-loved course with some of the most memorable coastline golf holes anywhere in Portugal.

A classic Silver Coast course with real history

Praia D’El Rey is the original flagship course of the region.

Before West Cliffs and Royal Óbidos existed, Scandinavian golfers were already travelling here — and many still return every year.

It has that familiar, established feel: mature trees, traditional routing, and a sense of calm around the resort.

But the moment you reach the ocean holes, the experience changes completely.

The inland holes play through pine trees and residential areas — classic, straightforward, and fair.

Then comes the switch: dramatic dunes, ocean wind, and views that take over the entire round.

How Praia D’El Rey plays

Praia D’El Rey offers two very different personalities — and that’s a big part of its charm.

The inland holes

Traditional and calm.

Fairways framed by pine forest and villas.

Playable, friendly, and ideal for finding your rhythm.

The ocean stretch — absolutely stunning

The holes along the Atlantic are, in my view, some of the most beautiful on the Silver Coast.

The abandoned fort on the cliff, the rolling dunes, the open wind, the light…

It all creates a feeling that is both raw and peaceful.

These holes alone make the course unforgettable — and they are the reason many golfers come back year after year.

Signature holes

12, 13, 14 and 15

Uninterrupted views of the Atlantic, dramatic dunes, and one of the most iconic stretches in Portuguese golf.

Tournament history

Praia D’El Rey has hosted multiple national and international tournaments and is well known for being fair, enjoyable and consistently well-maintained.

Staying nearby

If you stay at Royal Óbidos Scenic Resort or Evolutee Hotel, it’s only a 10-minute drive to Praia D’El Rey.

If Praia D’El Rey is part of your package, the transfer to and from the course is included — you simply book it through the reception.

Our cooperation with Praia D’El Rey

WestGolf Portugal collaborates closely with different courses, including Praia D’El Rey and West Cliffs.

In the near future, we will also be able to offer accommodation options connected to these resorts — giving our guests even more flexibility when planning their golf trip.

For now, it simply means we know the courses well and can provide honest, experience-based advice — and soon, even more complete travel solutions.
