Portugal’s little pastry that feels like sunshine

Few things say “Portugal” quite like a warm pastel de nata fresh from the oven. Crispy pastry, creamy filling — and just the right amount of sweetness.

If you’ve ever wondered why locals queue for them, this is why.

Practical Tips

Perfect for: A lazy morning, a coffee break after golf, or a sunset snack with a view.

Bring: A bit of time — best enjoyed slowly with a coffee (bica) and maybe a light dusting of cinnamon or sugar.

Tips: Go for the fresh ones: morning or late afternoon often means just-out-of-the-oven (ask for “quente”).

A sweet taste of Portugal

The pastel de nata is a national icon — a little puff-pastry custard tart that traces its roots back to the convent kitchens in Lisbon.

It’s everywhere in Portugal: cafés, bakeries, pastelarias on every street corner — and often topped with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a strong espresso (bica).

From humble beginnings, the pastel de nata has become more than just a pastry: it’s a ritual, a comfort, a sweet moment. The crispy shell gives way to creamy custard — warm, slightly caramelised, with a soft centre.

Why we love it (and you should too)

It’s accessible. Almost every pastelaria offers them, so no matter where you are on the coast or inland — you’ll find one.

It’s timeless. Tradition blends with everyday life; locals and travellers alike love it.

It captures what WestGolf Portugal is all about: enjoying life’s small pleasures — good pastry, good coffee, good company… maybe also a nice view to go with it.

So next time you’re in Portugal — after a round of golf, a beach walk, or simply relaxing — treat yourself. A pastel de nata (with coffee) might just be the perfect little “pause” you didn’t know you needed.
