For years, I felt that the extraordinary beaches of Portugal's west coast deserved a restaurant that truly matched the setting.
There have always been places with good food. Places with a nice view. Places worth visiting.
But somehow, very few managed to bring everything together.
Then came Plaj Beach House
Located above one of Santa Cruz's magnificent Atlantic beaches, Plaj has been transformed into a stylish and welcoming restaurant that makes the most of a setting that few places can match.
Portugal's west coast is blessed with vast west-facing beaches, dramatic ocean views and unforgettable sunsets. Plaj manages to bring all of those elements into the dining experience.
The renovation has been done with great taste. Natural materials, warm colours and thoughtful design create an atmosphere that feels both modern and relaxed.
It is the kind of place where you instantly feel comfortable, whether you visit on a sunny summer evening or during a windy winter afternoon.
From your table, only a few steps separate you from the beach itself.
Walk down the short staircase from the restaurant and you are standing directly on the sand, with the Atlantic Ocean stretching out in front of you.
The menu is varied rather than traditionally Portuguese, with a good selection of fish, seafood, meat and lighter dishes. The quality is consistently high, yet the prices remain surprisingly reasonable for a restaurant in such a privileged location.

Season
One of the things I appreciate most about Plaj is that it works in every season.
In summer, the beach and outdoor areas create a wonderful holiday atmosphere. In winter, the indoor restaurant becomes a cosy refuge from the Atlantic winds, with the ocean still providing the backdrop.
Travel there
If you are staying near the golf courses around Óbidos, reaching Plaj takes about an hour by car. The route follows Portugal's west coast through small towns and local communities, offering occasional glimpses of the Atlantic Ocean before arriving in Santa Cruz.
I would not recommend making the drive simply for lunch.
I would recommend making an afternoon or evening of it.
Explore a little of the coastline, enjoy the beach, stay for dinner and watch the sun slowly disappear into the Atlantic.

Just a nice feeling
On the About page of this website, I describe my local beach as "The place where I walk my dog, clear my mind and feel rich".
Not rich in money, but rich in the things that matter.
Plaj Beach House gives me much of the same feeling.
The restaurant has managed to create something that is surprisingly rare: a place that feels warm, welcoming and genuinely cosy in every season, while never losing its connection to the Atlantic Ocean just outside the windows.
Sitting there, watching the waves, enjoying a good meal and sharing time with family or friends, I am often reminded not only how fortunate I am to live on this beautiful stretch of coastline, but also how special it is when a place succeeds in capturing the very spirit of its surroundings.
