Summary
About 45 minutes north of the golf courses around Óbidos lies one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena in the world of surfing. Nazaré is famous for producing some of the biggest waves ever surfed — sometimes reaching heights that seem almost impossible when seen from the cliffs above the Atlantic.

Practical Tips
Distance: ~50 minutes
Best Season: November - February
Perfect for: anyone who wants to see something extraordinary
Bring: windbreaker - the cliffs can be windy
Tips: check wave forecasts before going
A Unique Coastal Town
Nazaré itself is worth the visit even without giant waves.
The town is divided into two parts. Down by the beach you find the traditional fishing town with its long sandy shoreline and promenade.
High above the ocean sits Sítio, the historic part of Nazaré located on a dramatic cliff overlooking the Atlantic.

From here you get one of the most impressive views along Portugal’s west coast. A small funicular railway connects the beach with the upper town, making it easy to move between the two levels.
At the northern end of the cliffs stands the small fortress Fortaleza de São Miguel Arcanjo. This is where spectators gather when the big waves arrive and where you can often see surfers preparing for the massive swells.
Why the Waves Become So Big
The reason Nazaré has become world famous among surfers is something hidden under the ocean.
Just offshore lies the Nazaré Canyon, a deep underwater canyon that funnels and amplifies Atlantic swell. When the right winter storms arrive, the canyon concentrates the energy and creates waves that can exceed 20 meters.
Because of this natural phenomenon, Nazaré has become one of the few places in the world where truly giant waves can form.
Nazaré has produced some of the largest waves ever surfed anywhere in the world!

When to See the Big Waves
The biggest waves typically appear during the winter months between November and February, when powerful Atlantic storms move towards Europe.
However, it is important to know that the giant waves do not happen every day. Even in winter the conditions must align perfectly with swell direction, wind and tide.
For those who want to follow the conditions, these sites are useful:

These tools give a good indication when large Atlantic swells are approaching the coast.
A Personal Note
Although I live on the same coast, I still have to experience the truly giant waves in person. Like many people here on the Silver Coast, I keep telling myself that the next big swell might be the one that finally sends me up to the cliffs to watch.
Even without record-breaking waves, the views from the cliffs and the atmosphere around the lighthouse make Nazaré a memorable excursion.
Distance from the Golf Courses
Nazaré is located about 45–50 minutes from the golf courses around Óbidos, making it an easy excursion if you want to experience something completely different from the fairways for an afternoon
